The work was executed the year Chagall permanently moved to Vence, in southern France. Characteristic of that period, it celebrates the region, its inhabitants and the light that bathes its landscapes. The sun lies at the center: painted in a bright white, it irradiates its warmth over the countryside, surrounded by a yellow halo. It clashes with the cool colors of the rest of the composition: the purple sky with bluish tints almost makes it look like the night has already set, and that the sun is actually the moon. The disparity is completed on land by the woman in red carrying a sheaf of wheat, an unambiguous symbol of solar exuberance and vitality, coupled with the man in blue, a color associated with the night. Instead of creating confusion, Chagall reaches a balance between the two forces that guide our soul. The woman also embodies the fertility of the land, joyfully sharing her bounties with men, an illustration of the safe and welcoming haven Chagall found in Vence.
